WHAT TO DO?

With local elections and the London mayoral contest imminent I am in a quandary who I should support.
I have now left the BNP, not because of any policy differences nor by any diminution of my nationalist beliefs but because I see the present leader and his associates leading the party and our cause to ever more irrelevance.

I like other contributors have left with a heavy heart and sadness at the seeming waste of all our efforts to promote the nationalist cause in Wigan and Leigh, efforts which were starting to bear fruit only two short years ago.
That these hopes have been dashed is a bitter pill for me to swallow as it is for the large number of patriots not now involved in the party.

I put the blame for this calamitous decline in the Party's fortunes squarely on Nick Griffin.
For eight years I idolised him until the blinkers were removed from my eyes.
Inept handling of the media, broken pledges to party members and replacing of intelligent long standing officials by rough semi literate uncouth individuals brought the party into disrepute and gave our enemies ammunition which we could ill afford.

Griffin's contempt for the democratic process was the last straw for me when he renaged on the conference decision to have elected members on the Advisory Council and followed that by his underhand methods to retain his position as leader, a position he had stated previously he would give up.
Before the election anyone he perceived as a threat was expelled on spurious grounds.
Even Stalin went through the formality of a show trial. Griffin just sacked people, endorsed of course by his docile incestuous appointees on the advisory council who owe their position to him.

All this is bad enough but to make progress in elections you have to be liked by the voters.

Nick Griffin is not liked by the voters, and he must know this.

So why does he cling on?
One reason is the money his position brings. He will not hold his MEP seat next time but he did con the party into agreeing a pension of about £20,000 for himself if he finished.

But could there be another reason? That he is a State asset.

It is a well known fact that the State will do and is doing its best to shut down the nationalist movement and has infiltrators inserted in the BNP ranks.

Now think about it. How best to destroy a party?
Do it quickly and a new one will rise to take its place.

Do it slowly, eat away at it like a cancer and it will gradually fade over a period of years while they flood the country with immigrants past a point of no return.
Make it seem to activists that their position is hopeless and that their work as been in vain.
Demoralise them and make them suspicious of their colleagues.

This latter scenario is what has happened to the BNP UNDER NICK GRIFFIN'S LEADERSHIP.

If he really believed in the cause he would make way for someone more electible and who could unite ALL nationalists. That he does not do as leaders of other parties routinely do and make way for a more suitable leader shows he puts himself (or his paymasters?) before our country.
The BNP brand could be resurrected if he let go of the reins but he will not do so and with him a leader the slow decline will continue.

So there you have my dilemma.
I have good friends and former colleagues who still believe in and support Nick Griffin and who are standing for the Party.
In my opinion they have not seen the light. He is taking them for a ride.

Do I wish them well or not? Of course, as individuals.
If the BNP does well in May, Griffin will see that as a confirmation of his hold on Nationalism and make it harder to prize the leadership from him and re vamp the Party.
BUT if it and other Nationalist parties do badly patriots will become demoralised and opt out of the political process.

I believe we should recognise the hard work of all nationalist parties and at least vote for them.
Even if no longer a member of the BNP bite your tongue and vote for them. The candidates will be usually good patriots and deserve our votes.
If there are other nationalist or patriotic parties or people standing we should vote for them, but if there is no choice other than the parties who have and are destroying our country,--

SPOIL YOUR PAPER. At least at the count it will be read and your opinion noted.

I HOPE after the election all the various strands of nationalist belief will in some way come together and unite under one banner.
Perhaps a bad result will knock their heads together and even make Nick Griffin see sense.

But I doubt the latter.
Even when his vote goes down he will hail it as a triumph!

"STEP DOWN NOW" A FOOTNOTE!

Not renewing my British National Party membership this year was a very, very bitter pill to swallow.

I have since been in my own self induced political exile while I absorb just what unfolds around me and indeed what steps must be now be taken personally..........

I've left behind some very remarkable, intelligent and trusting friends that I would never ever have had the great fortune to meet otherwise..........! Remembering the early days of that dingy back room of a town centre pub in Wigan with a handful of patriots to the full house and standing room only venues in Leigh and the surrounding areas in such a short space of time that brought an immense sense of achievement, pride and political reward for those of us who actually cared wholeheartedly for our once beautiful towns, country and nation.

The Wigan and Leigh area amassed the highest number of votes cast for Nick Griffin in the European Elections than any other area within the north west, stood 12 candidates in one local election and put forward 3 successful candidates at the last general election and all securing our own £500 deposits with ease.

So, this brings me to declare that I'm actually full of admiration (albeit on sentimental reasons only and contrary to what others may think on the issue) for those individuals still in the local BNP and they who have rode the wave of the recent years through the continuing internal turmoil along with the inane political debacle and yet who are thus still putting themselves above the very fragile Griffin parapet to stand in the local elections on May 3rd. ( I did count only five candidates and not six?) And will therefore not criticise those for participating in these forthcoming elections; although I do criticise furiously those still at the helm of this rapidly imploding corrupt and rabidly dying political party!

And yet has local nationalism and patriotism become a spent force here in Leigh or indeed Wigan for that matter and beyond all repair and reconciliation...........?

Not at all........it's growing even stronger....... believe me! It's just requiring a little nurturing!

Now, after much deliberation I have decided that I will stand in the local elections as an Independent candidate on May 3rd in the Leigh South ward (my own ward) so look out for my result! Additionally, our friend Chris (a past supporter, donor and activist) will also stand in the Leigh East ward as an Independent candidate! Nick Griffin: For the Good of Nationalism, Step Down Now

Scandal upon scandal, nightmare upon nightmare, disgrace upon disgrace: there is seemingly no end to the depths and degradations to which nationalism is being dragged by Nick Griffin—and the time has come for him to step down for the good of the cause.

Scandal 1: Martin Reynolds

In 2006, the People newspaper revealed that Nick Griffin’s personal bodyguard, Martin Reynolds, is a “depraved swinger who enjoys squalid orgies.

“By day burly bodybuilder Martin Reynolds escorts Griffin, 46, who constantly preaches family values.

“By night Reynolds, 37, revels in debauched threesomes with his wife and another woman, as pictures obtained by the People show.

“The photos involving the married dad of three have caused a huge rift in the BNP.

“In one photograph Reynolds watches a tattooed and pierced dark-haired woman wearing a black-leather corset use a toy to perform a sex act on the other woman.

“Next the flabby pervert sits on a grotty brown sofa and stares down as a woman wearing a negligee is pleasured by both herself and the other woman.

“In another photo too obscene to publish he sprawls on the floor pleasuring himself and gawping as the two women romp. Finally he grabs hold of the dark-haired woman and poses for a photo as he involved [sic] in the group sex.”

The People article goes on to point out that Reynolds realised the damage this exposure would do to the party, and offered to stand down.

Griffin, however, refused to accept his resignation, and as a result, Reynolds is today paid out of EU funds.

“When the snaps first began circulating, shaven-headed Reynolds offered to stand down because he was concerned about damaging the party image,” the People continued.

“But boss Griffin refused to accept the sleazeball’s resignation.

“This has angered some BNP members. A senior source inside the party said: ‘We are supposed to be showing Britain that we support clean-living family life and are a genuine alternative to the big three parties.

‘Yet time after time things like this crop-up and completely ruin our credibility. It’s no wonder people are getting fed up with Griffin and divisions are splitting the party.’”

Scandal 2: Pat Harrington and the Sex Dungeon

In 2007, the Sunday Mail ran a full page expose of Harrington’s “dirty little secret”—the fact that his then-wife, Jacqueline Sharp, worked as a dominatrix in private sex dungeons in Edinburgh (“Bureau Worker Is Miss Whiplash”, Sunday Mail April 22, 2007).

According to the article, Harrington/Sharp “worked” from a “sleazy sex dungeon near the city’s Haymarket train station.

“On her website, Sharp poses in a black PVC police officer’s outfit and thigh-high boots while brandishing a leather whip and handcuffs.

“Another shot shows her in sleazy red and black underwear with long black gloves, boots…and a studded paddle for spanking.

“Other photos show her with an assortment of torture devices—including chains, handcuffs, and gags.

“Sharp describes herself as a ‘sexy, stunning, strict mistress’ and boasts she even has her own rack, wrist and ankle restrains [sic].

“Her jobless husband Patrick Harrington knows about his wife’s murky sideline,” the newspaper report continued.

Despite knowing all of this, Griffin still worked with Pat Harrington to head up the Solidarity trade union, and used the BNP to promote that union and Harrington.

Scandal 3: The Granny Porn Regional Organiser

When Griffin—at Harrington’s behest—started expelling all those who objected to the corruption and degeneracy at the heart of the BNP, one of the first “new” appointments was the regional organiser in Yorkshire, Ian Kitchen.

Griffin appointed Kitchen despite knowing full well that he and his wife, Linda, were “swingers” who had manufactured and distributed “granny porn.”

When BNP officials objected to the appointment and warned that this would be severely damaging to the BNP’s public image, Griffin dismissed the objections as “irrelevant” because the Kitchens were “consenting adults and no-one would care less.”

In fact, the media made a meal out of the granny porn fiasco, and Kitchen was forced to resign in the resultant storm.

Scandal 4: The “can travel” male escort who became the BNP’s London mayor candidate.

Griffin’s choice of Carlos Cortiglia to be the BNP’s London mayoral candidate was outrageous enough because of the Uruguayan-born foreigner’s (unsuccessful) attempt to volunteer to fight for Argentina against Britain during the Falklands War—but far worse lay in store.

It was recently revealed that Cortiglia, using the name “Kiska”, was a frenetic poster on the Internet Usenet and discussion groups where he advertised sexual services for singles and couples.

Some of Cortiglia’s messages illustrate the point:

“White male fit non smoker clean shaven openminded looking for adult fun with couples and/or females. I cannot accommodate but can travel. Discretion assured and expected” (posted in the alt.sex.swingers.uk newsgroup).

Although this had been brought to Griffin’s attention, the BNP leader chose to keep Cortiglia on and to promote him further.

Scandal 5: The Soho porn/date rape drug seller.

The revelations about Griffin’s latest appointment—London organiser Steve Squires—and alleged activities related to the ownership of a sleazy sex shop in Soho and the sale of the infamous and illegal “date rape” drug, will, if proven accurate, merely be the confirmation of a well-established trend in the BNP under Nick Griffin’s leadership.

There is a rancid trail of sexual deviancy which follows Nick Griffin like a shadow, and it is a spectre which he positively encourages and in which he revels.

In addition to the awful list (the above incidents are only the worst, there are many more) of sexual freaks which Griffin holds close to his bosom, the full-of-sexual-innuendo texts which he sent to his (former) internet-attack dog Claudia Dalgleish, are also indicative of a mindset which actively encourages this sort of behaviour.

What people do in their private lives is indeed their own business—but when a leader of a political party actively encourages and promotes such people (instead of expelling or distancing oneself from them, as any normal party leader would do), then you know that you are dealing with someone who has a severe psychological problem.

This behaviour has brought disgrace and demoralisation upon the entire nationalist movement, and has provided manna from heaven for critics of the party who can now justifiably point to the long list of freaks and madmen appointed, encouraged and protected by Nick Griffin, as evidence of the party’s inherent sickness.

This demoralisation and destruction of the party has had wider ramifications. The activist base has been almost entirely depleted, so that in former strongholds like Kirklees, there are no BNP candidates for the first time in 12 years.

As if that was not enough, the latest (and late) party accounts show that the true party debt was in excess of £800,000—despite Griffin lying through his teeth to the members during the leadership election that the claims of these debts were “lies” (remember the “Mythbusters” leaflet, which, under the heading “DEBTS—IN REALITY” said that “TOTAL AGREED CENTRAL PARTY PAYMENTS OWED—£52,000).”

Through a barrage of filth, deviancy, lies and deception, Nick Griffin has utterly destroyed the BNP—and the hard work, money, effort and sacrifice of thousands of activists for over a decade.

If he had stood down a while ago, as he had promised, Nick Griffin might well have gone down in nationalism as someone who laid the groundwork for the party’s ascendancy.

Instead, his name will now be cursed forever as the person who single-handedly destroyed the BNP and set back the cause of nationalism.

If he has any shred of decency left, hiding in the murkiness of his soul, he would step down now, for the good of the cause, and halt the callous betrayal of so many good people.

We could make massive inroads within Britains Political establishment, we could even have BNP MPs.

BUT ....

With Griffin still holding us back, the Nationalist community should look at who has destroyed the gains made by the BNP due to the Hard Graft,Time and Effort Activists put in to fight Elections and we were making progress, so why have we gone backwards to such an extent that the party now looks like the party did in the 90s.

If Griffin was a TRUE PATRIOT willing to save OUR COUNTRY then he wouldn't hesitate to step down as the Chairman and let those of us who are willing to do what needs to be done to save our country and people.

Griffin will still have his Euro seat and could become the Deputy Chairman able to advise and still have input to running the party, but not control of the party. I wonder what Simon Darby could do if he is replaced, go back to his day job working behind the scenes to bring the party down or does he have a job which we don't know about?

There are some very very good, hard working and intelligent Nationalists who could replace Nick and lead us to Victory.

BUT we need Nick Griffin to stand down as we don't have 20yrs left to play at politics, we were really making headway from the early years of this century up to 2010 when Nick crashed the party bus damaging the Activists Hard Graft. Some will never return to Nationalism but are still Nationalists, other Activists still within the party are disillusioned and reluctant to do anything to promote and push the party onwards as the last time they did Griffin came along and destroyed years and years of BNP Activists unpaid work.

Now they are scraping the bottom of the barrell just to get candidates to stand, they are so desperate that members who would never stand for election in the past now have to stand to make out that the BNP is carrying on as usual.

Fair enough, but those who are left within the BNP, those who would refuse to stand in the past are those that shouldn't stand for election now as they are unsuitable, which of course they know, and the reason for not putting themselves forward as candidates before, but they have been coerced, cajoled and bullied into standing just as paper candidates in all but two wards out of the six Wigan BNP are contesting, are putting a paper candidate up for Wigan BNPs most favourable ward.

Come on Wigan BNP, are you lot just playing at Nationalism ?

At the Fourth Feathers Youth Club, a run-down building near London’s Baker Street, the Islamic cleric Abu Qatada banged his stick on the wooden floor as he preached a hate-filled speech against the British people.

Sixty Muslim men and boys at the Friday lunchtime prayers listened to the inflammatory sermon of Bin Laden’s right-hand man in Britain, before praying in deep devotion to Allah.

But kneeling among them that day in April 2000 was an undercover spy, Reda Hassaine, working for the British Government. He had been monitoring Abu Qatada’s evil activities for six years – and his cover was about to be blown.

Hassaine had reported to Scotland Yard’s Special Branch and the homeland secret service, MI5, that Abu Qatada and his sidekick, the hook-handed cleric Abu Hamza, were inciting terror attacks in London.

He had seen both men collect thousands of pounds from their congregations to pay to send young British Muslims abroad to train as suicide bombers and then return here.

He had warned his secret service minders that the clerics wanted nothing short of a takeover of the West and its Christian way of life, using any kind of atrocity necessary.

But the Daily Mail can reveal that the secret agent’s vital information was ignored because of a little-known deal described as a ‘covenant of security’ forged between the security agencies and radical Islamists in the UK.

The unwritten, if cynical, pact allowed radical clerics to orchestrate and encourage Islamist attacks abroad. Their brainwashing of young home-grown Muslims here was tolerated by the secret services in the hope there would be no attacks on targets in Britain.

It is a bitter irony that the pact completely failed to halt the London bombings of 2005, while allowing Qatada, Hamza and other extremists like them to plot and proselytise for years while living in Britain with their families for free – their state benefits funded by taxpayers.

Today, the deal has cost Britain dear. Ministers are struggling to send Abu Qatada back to his home country of Jordan, to stand trial for a string of terrorist atrocities there.

And yesterday the family of Abu Hamza announced an appeal (which could take months) against a European Court of Human Rights ruling that he should be extradited to the U.S. on terror charges. If he is ever found guilty in America, he would be imprisoned for life.

As for MI5 undercover agent Reda Hassaine, he finds it astounding that such Islamist troublemakers remain on British soil. He blew the whistle on Qatada and Hamza more than a decade ago – paying a big personal price himself for doing so.

Minutes after observing prayers in the Fourth Feathers Club that day in 2000, Hassaine was beaten up by Qatada’s henchmen.
Hassaine recalled: ‘A sidekick of Qatada had learned I was a spy and pointed me out after the sermon that day. At that point, Qatada began to recite a special prayer of jihad, to encourage the killing of anyone who threatens Islam. I immediately sensed I was in trouble.

‘After the service, I walked quickly to the doorway and pulled on my shoes. As I did so, I felt a big kick in my face, another on my head. A group of Abu Qatada’s men punched and hit me. They booted my teeth into the back of my head. I managed to wriggle away and fled into the street. The first thing I did, through my bloodied mouth, was to ring my MI5 minder.’

It was the last time that Algerian-born Hassaine ever saw Abu Qatada in the flesh. Nor, because his cover had been blown, was he able to continue his undercover work watching Abu Hamza.

Worshippers at the Fourth Feathers club, which Qatada hired privately every Friday, and nearby Finsbury Park mosque, where Hamza preached, were well-acquainted and would have tipped each other off about what he was up to.

But, as Hassaine explained: ‘I had heard their speeches of hate tens of times in the mosques and their prayer meetings.

‘At the Fourth Feathers Club, I saw Qatada brainwash young Muslims, living in Britain from Africa, Somalia, Sudan, Morocco and my own country of Algeria, by urging them to kill Christians and Jews.

‘Qatada preached that if a Muslim became a suicide bomber, he would go to paradise and be able to make love to virgins.

‘He would tell audiences, “Today is the time for war against the West. Our duty is to destroy them before they destroy us and Islam”.

‘At the Finsbury Park mosque, I watched Hamza urge young worshippers to train for jihad (holy Islamic war against the West) and go to training camps in Afghanistan. There were even discussions at the mosque among his followers about how to launch chemical and biological attacks on Britain.’

Adds Hassaine: ‘I told my three secret service minders (who were called Stephen, Richard and Mark) everything I witnessed. They saw my reports, which I wrote up every night, and heard my warnings. But they did nothing. The West and Britain have suffered for that ever since.’

Hassaine’s revelations are particularly pertinent now. Seven weeks ago, Qatada was released from Long Lartin top security jail in Worcestershire, where he has spent the best part of a decade fighting extradition to his home country.

He was granted bail following a European Court of Human Rights ruling that he should not be deported to Jordan (where he has been convicted in his absence for planning terrorist attacks) because, it’s claimed, he would not receive a fair trial there.

He is now staying under 22-hours-a-day curfew in London, living with his wife and five children on state benefits. Up to 60 police will guard him round the clock at a cost of millions a year.

Home Secretary Theresa May recently travelled to Jordan to discuss ways the Government might overcome the European ruling and send him back there.

Hassaine is not surprised that Qatada was granted asylum in Britain. A former newspaper editor, a Muslim and an Arab speaker, he came to Britain in the 1990s. Accompanied by his baby son and wife, he was fleeing the Islamist uprisings in his own country of Algeria, where 70 journalists had been murdered.

In London, he was soon contacted by the Algerian and French secret services. They asked him to go undercover into the mosques and report on how Islamists were establishing a powerbase here and plotting against the ‘infidels’ of the West.

Hassaine also volunteered to work for Scotland Yard’s Special Branch, which in turn passed him on to MI5. He was then contracted – at a pitiful £380 a month plus expenses – to infiltrate Qatada and Hamza’s world, make friends with their aides and gain their trust.

Diaries, tapes, notes and reports that Hassaine collected while he conducted surveillance operations reveal the true nature of these men’s threat to Britain.

A recording of Qatada, made in 1999 and in the file, reveals him preaching that every Muslim child in Britain should spend four hours a day in the mosque being taught about the evil influences of life in a Christian country. Hassaine reported back to MI5 about the huge sums of money being collected in the mosques to finance trips by extremist young British Muslims to terrorist training camps.

He passed his findings to the MI5 minders during clandestine meetings at hotels, including the Holiday Inn in London’s Victoria, when a room was routinely booked under the name ‘Abbey’.

In 1999, Hassaine told his minders that Abu Qatada had made a speech to his followers advocating the killing of Jews and praising terrorist attacks in the West.

Although Qatada was eventually arrested in Britain over his suspected involvement in a plot by Islamists to bomb the Christmas market in Strasbourg, France, he was freed without charge.

It was only in 2002 that he was jailed in London after German police found tapes of his war-mongering sermons in a flat used by some of the 9/11 suicide bombers before the Twin Towers attack on New York.

In 2005 he was freed, but was re-arrested under anti-terror laws five months later. He has used every twist and turn of human rights laws to escape extradition to Jordan where he is wanted over terror atrocities and, of course, is now out from jail and living at the taxpayers’ expense.

Referring to the controversial ‘covenant of security’ that allowed radical clerics to continue to foment hatred against the West on condition they didn’t perpetrate terror attacks on British soil, Hassaine says: ‘I am sickened by how Britain has allowed him to live here.’

He continues: ‘I told MI5 and Scotland Yard time and again how Qatada and his followers laugh behind their backs. They hate Britain and want to turn this country into an Islamic state.’

Hamza, who came to the UK from Egypt as a student in the early 1980s, met and married an English woman from whom he was later divorced. The marriage gave him the right to British citizenship.

He showed his true colours by travelling to Afghanistan to wage a ‘jihad’ during the Soviet occupation, suffering injuries to his hands, which were blown off.

On his return he began preaching his radical sermons at Finsbury Park, stoking up discontent by praising Osama Bin Laden in the wake of the Twin Towers attacks.

He was finally arrested and is now serving seven years for soliciting to murder and inciting racial hatred.

He is also accused of helping his followers meet Taliban commanders in Afghanistan and is wanted in America in connection with the taking of 16 hostages in Yemen. After being jailed here, Hamza has been fighting extradition (with his legal bills paid for by the state) ever since.

So why, you might wonder, were Qatada and Hamza not hurled out of Britain years ago – using the evidence of undercover agent Hassaine?

Seven years ago, former MI5 chief Dame Stella Rimington was asked on television why the security services had not listened to Hassaine, whose name had emerged publicly in newspaper and television investigations into the radical mosques.

She said his information was ‘crucial’ in the war against terror, but never acted on to protect Hassaine himself from being killed as an undercover informant.

The spy has different views. ‘I always felt the British secret services didn’t realise the seriousness of what I was telling them. Sometimes, I felt like screaming at my minders, “Don’t you understand the risks these people pose?”

‘I heard them talking of how wonderful it would be to bomb the London Underground years before it happened seven years ago.

‘They talked about how to set off car bombs and ways to commit mass murder. They turned the heads of thousands of young Muslims who left their prayer and mosque meetings mesmerised and hating Britain.

‘But telling your security services was like talking to a brick wall.’

It was only much later, in the same year as the London bombing when Qatada made a failed appeal against detention under anti-terrorism laws, that Hassaine was taken seriously.

Information provided by MI5 was presented in the High Court to the judge, Mr Justice Collins. Qatada’s ‘kill the Jews’ speech – reported to the secret services by Hassaine – was mentioned. The judge said it was a good reason to dismiss Qatada’s appeal.

The preacher, said the judge, was ‘heavily involved and at the centre of terrorist activities in the UK associated with Al Qaeda. He is a truly dangerous individual’.

At last, Hassaine felt vindicated.

Today, he has few teeth left – a physical legacy of the day he was beaten up at the Fourth Feathers. After the attack, Hassaine never worked for the British secret services again. In recent years, he has resumed his journalist work, living in North London, but is still afraid.

He says: ‘I gave MI5 and Scotland Yard everything I knew – and nearly lost my life in the mosque attack.

‘My minders begged me not to report the attack to the police – saying any court case would make public that these mosques were under surveillance by the secret services. I obeyed that request.

‘Now, when I see Qatada and Hamza running rings around the British Government again, I wish they had listened to my warnings.’

The Frankfurter Rundschau newspaper has seen a leaked directive from the Labour Ministry to the Federal Employment Agency - dated February 23 – which bars people who move to Germany from 14 EU countries, plus Norway, Iceland and Turkey, from claiming the basic unemployment benefit known as Hartz IV.

The European Union countries banned include Greece, Spain and Portugal, which has led the German media to interpret the move as an attempt to head off people moving to Germany before they have found work.

Up until now, immigrants from the 17 signatories to the European Convention on Social and Medical Assistance (EFA), signed in 1953, were entitled to claim unemployment benefit in each other’s countries while they looked for work. The ministry has effectively unilaterally ended this agreement, justifying the move by saying that all EU immigrants should be entitled to equal benefit rights.

EU immigrants have only been able to claim benefits in Germany since October 2010, when a French man used the EFA agreement to claim the right in a federal court. Since then, the German job centre has had to pay benefits to immigrants from EFA signatories even if they have come to Germany exclusively to look for work.

“To give EU citizens entitlement to Hartz IV from day one does run the risk of abuse, since anyone can say they are looking for a job,” Ferdinand Wollenschläger, a European law professor from the University of Augsburg told the paper. “But you have to ask how realistic it is that young, educated Spanish people leave their home country to live on Hartz IV in Germany.”

The opposition said it was mystified by the ministry’s decision. “The number of immigrants that start claiming Hartz IV as soon as they arrive is almost zero,” Elke Ferner, deputy parliamentary chairwoman of the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) told the Frankfurter Rundschau.

The Federal Employment Office also said that the directive would have little effect on its work, since immigrants heading straight into the social security system were seen “only in individual cases.” They described the Labour Ministry’s move as a “preventative measure.”
