GLOBAL WARMING: GREENLAND ICE SHEET

The DYE series of radar stations were a series of long-distance early warning radar stations that were built across the Greenland ice sheet between 1955 and 1960. DYE-3 was one of these stations.

Here is a photograph of it when it was first built:



You can get an idea of the size of the thing by the staircase on the left, and the small crane on the right. It's certainly not a small old-folks bungalow.

To get a further idea of the size of it, the C-130 Hercules is a fair distance THIS side of it. I've worked on C-130s - they're big.

The site was abandoned in 1990/1991 because of rising ice levels. The following two photos are from 2006:
