How long before this sort of stuff starts happening here?

A failure of the community

Cultural enrichment takes many diverse and sometime unexpected forms. In the Netherlands this week, there was an uproar about what seems to be the latest trend in cultural enrichment (NL), disrupting funeral processions:

In Amersfoort yet again a funeral procession was disrupted by youth. Students of the [islamic] primary school Bilal flipped their middle-finger and were seen cheering as a procession of mourners drove by.

The head of the school told RTV Utrecht he will speak to the children about their behavior. Additionally he would like to introduce the bereaved to the children, to make them realize what they have done.

The bland reporting by RTV Utrecht not withstanding, it became clear quite quickly the 'youth' involved were Moroccan children, reported to be between 9 and 11 years old.

This isn't the first time something like this has happened either. Back in the end of May, a funeral procession was similarly harassed by Moroccan 'youth', circling the procession on their bike, cheering and shouting 'Jews, Jews, Jews'. In an item on Dutch TV (NL) CEO of the funeral organisation UVZ relates the incident during the funeral of a 17 year old girls. At the start of the procession, the lead car is approached by young Moroccans wanting to know if the occupant of the coffin is a muslim. After hearing the negative answer, they proceed thumping and kicking the funeral limousine, saying 'Good, one less dog'.

That this has happened, is happening, that such is being done by Moroccan children as young as 9 to 11 even, is enough to descend into a blood-thirsty rage by itself. But this isn't the most infuriating aspect of the story. That distinction goes to the combined attempts by director and staff of the Bilal school and the MSM to downplay the incident and refocus the issue.

In the wake of the incident the school received hundreds of angry emails, some of which were of a threatening nature. This gave the school and the Dutch MSM the opportunity to focus on the fact that the a primary school needs extra police protection (NL). Because, according to the director of the Bilal school, in a crisis like this a primary school is very vulnerable. In De Telegraaf (NL; pdf) the director directs attention to the disquiet among parents of the schools students over the indignant reactions this news has provoked. The teachers also are 'irritated' with the commotion the news has caused. Thus, the angle played up big in the MSM is not the disrespectful, uncivilized and frankly depraved behaviour of the Moroccan children. Following the Dutch MSM, one would be forgiven the impression that the main problem is the reactions this news has provoked in Dutch society.

One of those involved is quoted as saying that the boys involved cannot be blamed for their behaviour since 'an eleven year old does not have the moral awareness'. Really? That is your explanation? That is the excuse? Geenstijl asks (NL), quite rightly: "How many times did you harass a funeral procession when you were 11? Did you also flip of random bereaved as an 11-year-old? And the 64,000 dollar question: Did you have sufficient moral awareness about death and mourning to be held responsible for offensive behaviour?"

This news raises (yet again) some uncomfortable questions about the Moroccan community and its place within our borders. That these children do not understand, even at the age of 9, that death comes to us all and that the death of a loved one is a period of momentous grief and loss that should be treated with the respect and dignity it deserves, points to a monumental failure, not just of the parents involved, but of the entire community, including the director and staff of the Bilal school. This is illustrated by the irritation of the school staff and even some of the parents quoted in De Telegraaf with the 'overblown reaction' of the civilized, non-Moroccan portion of the Dutch populace, who are 'making a mountain out of an mole hill'.

There is no sign whatsoever of the realization that this incident is way, WAY beyond mere mischief and exuberant boy-ish naughtiness. Thus it is not just the children and the parents that must be held accountable. The entire Moroccan community has failed to inculcate even the most basic respect and civility in their youngsters. It is the entire Moroccan community that is responsible for this incident. And it is time the Moroccan community in the Netherlands start to realize they are fast outstaying their welcome.

The Norse are alive and well and living in the North West England

The Norse are alive and well and living in the North West of England. That's the revelation in a new book on an epic research project into the genetic footprint of the Scandinavian invaders.

Viking DNA: The Wirral and West Lancashire Project is the culmination of several years of research by Professor Steve Harding from the University of Nottingham, Professor Mark Jobling and Dr Turi King from the University of Leicester, and many other collaborators. It highlights the power of modern DNA methods for investigating ancestry, in this case using the North West of England as an example.

The North West has long been known to have special links with the Norse going back over a thousand years. Evidence has taken several forms such as archaeological, ancient manuscripts, local surnames and place names such as 'Thingwall' from the Old Norse 'ing-vollr' meaning 'meeting place'.

The new book tells the story of how 21st century genetic methods have been used in conjunction with historical and linguistic evidence to investigate the Norse ancestry of North West of England. DNA analysis of samples of the local population has scientifically proved that the Vikings settled in the area in large numbers and left a genetic legacy which survives and continues today.

The researchers new Norse saga unfolded as they carried out cheek swab DNA tests on around 100 men from the area who had local surnames dating back hundreds of years. Some names were sourced from a tax register from the time of King Henry VIII, others from lists of alehouse and criminal records, and a list of people who contributed to the stipend of a priest. Only men were chosen because they carry the Y-chromosome, the DNA on which, like their surname, is passed down the paternal line from father to son with little or no change.

The results found that up to 50 per cent of the DNA from the men of both Old Wirral and Old West Lancashire ancestry was indeed Norse in origin. The full scientific study appeared in the leading journal 'Molecular Biology and Evolution' but has now been put into context for a wider audience in this new, full colourillustrated book which pulls together all the evidence, both scientific and historical.

Professor Steve Harding said: "The results forming the basis of this book were very exciting because they tie in with the other evidence from the area. We have tried to explain the background and the DNA method in a way that everyone can understand, and it should be of interest to anyone who is curious about the Vikings and ancestry".

The Wirral and West Lancashire Viking DNA survey has now been extended to North Lancashire, Cumbria and over the Pennines to North Yorkshire to see how far the Norse settlers from the Irish Sea penetrated into medieval northern England. 

The researchers are also collaborating with experts in Scandinavia focusing again on people who can show that their ancestry goes back many generations in particular parts of Scandinavia. In this way they will be able to get a much better idea of what the genetic profile of Scandinavia was like in the Viking age.

TREVOR PHILLIPS - WHY I SHOULD BE SACKED.

Christians are more militant than Muslims, says Government's equalities boss

Muslims are integrating into British society better than many Christians, according to the head of the Government's equality watchdog.

Trevor Phillips warned that "an old time religion incompatible with modern society" is driving the revival in the Anglican and Catholic Churches and clashing with mainstream views, especially on homosexuality.

He accused Christians, particularly evangelicals, of being more militant than Muslims in complaining about discrimination, arguing that many of the claims are motivated by a desire for greater political influence.

However the chairman of the Equality and Human Rights Commission expressed concern that people of faith are "under siege" from atheists whom he accused of attempting to "drive religion underground".

In an interview with the Sunday Telegraph ahead of a landmark report on religious discrimination in Britain, he said the Commission wants to protect Christians and Muslims from discrimination, admitting his body had not been seen to stand up for the people discriminated against because of their faith in the past.

In a wide-ranging intervention into the debate over the role of religion in modern Britain, Mr Phillips:

* warned it had become "fashionable" to attack and mock religion, singling out atheist polemicist Richard Dawkins for his views;

* said faith groups should be free from interference in their own affairs, meaning churches should be allowed to block women and homosexuals from being priests and bishops;

* attacked hardline Christian groups which he said were picking fights - particularly on the issue of homosexuality - for their own political ends;

* told churches and religious institutions they had to comply with equality legislation when they delivered services to the public as a whole.

The report, published by the Commission tomorrow, says that some religious groups have been the victims of rising discrimination over the last decade.

It shows that in the course of the last decade, the number of employment tribunal cases on religion or belief brought each year has risen from 70 to 1000 - although only a fraction of cases were upheld.

Mr Phillips spoke after a series of high-profile cases which have featured Christians claiming they have been discriminated against because of their beliefs, with a doctor currently fighting a reprimand from the General Medical Council for sharing his faith with a patient.

While the equalities boss promised to fight for the rights of Christians, he expressed concern that many cases were driven by fundamentalist Christians who are holding increasing sway over the mainstream churches because of the influence of African and Caribbean immigrants with "intolerant" views.

In contrast, Muslims are less vociferous because they are trying to integrate into British "liberal democracy", he said.

"I think there's an awful lot of noise about the Church being persecuted but there is a more real issue that the conventional churches face that the people who are really driving their revival and success believe in an old time religion which in my view is incompatible with a modern, multi-ethnic, multicultural society," Phillips said.

"Muslim communities in this country are doing their damnedest to try to come to terms with their neighbours to try to integrate and they're doing their best to try to develop an idea of Islam that is compatible with living in a modern liberal democracy.

"The most likely victim of actual religious discrimination in British society is a Muslim but the person who is most likely to feel slighted because of their religion is an evangelical Christian."

Senior clergy, including Lord Carey, the former Archbishop of Canterbury, have attacked equality laws for eroding Christianity and stifling free speech, but Phillips said many of the legal cases brought by Christians on issues surrounding homosexuality were motivated by an attempt to gain political influence.

"I think for a lot of Christian activists, they want to have a fight and they choose sexual orientation as the ground to fight it on," he said.

"I think the whole argument isn't about the rights of Christians. It's about politics. It's about a group of people who really want to have weight and influence."

He added: "There are a lot of Christian activist voices who appear bent on stressing the kind of persecution that I don't think really exists in this country."

However, Mr Phillips, who is a Salvationist from a strong Christian background, expressed concern over the rise in Britain of anti-religious voices, such as Richard Dawkins, who are intolerant of people of faith.

"I understand why a lot of people in faith groups feel a bit under siege," he said.

"There's no question that there is more anti-religion noise in Britain.

"There's a great deal of polemic which is anti-religious, which is quite fashionable."

Phillips said that the Commission is committed to protecting people of faith against discrimination and also defended the right of religious institutions to be free from Government interference.

The Church of England is under pressure to allow openly gay clergy to be made bishops, while the Catholic Church only permits men to be priests, but the head of the Government-funded equalities watchdog said they are entitled to rule on their own affairs.

"The law doesn't dictate their organisation internally, in the way they appoint their ministers and bishops for example," he said.

"It's perfectly fair that you can't be a Roman Catholic priest unless you're a man. It seems right that the reach of anti-discriminatory law should stop at the door of the church or mosque.

"I'm not keen on the idea of a church run by the state.

"I don't think the law should run to telling churches how they should conduct their own affairs."

The intervention by the Commission comes after criticism of its £70 million annual budget, which is to be cut drastically.

Mr Phillips, a former Labour chairman of the Greater London Assembly and television producer was criticised for his £110,000 a year salary and was accused of "pandering to the right" by Ken Livingstone, the former Labour London mayor, for saying that multiculturalism had failed.

TIMES CHANGE BACK AGAIN

The world is about to change, for the better….

1967 and Israel wiped out the Egyptian Airforce in a single raid. All the Egyptian fighter aircraft disabled on the ground and none made it to the air – well, that’s the story anyway.
Into the Egyptian territories of Gaza and the Sinai Peninsula, whipped Jordan and kicked them out of Jerusalem and pushed right to the West Bank of the Jordan River. The fortified high ground of Syria’s Golan Heights as well.
That was three surrounding countries, all bigger, all with larger armies, all beaten off simultaneously. Not just beaten, but their air forces destroyed, armies pushed back and the war was over in just six days. Iraqi air force was chopped to bits as well.
WOW.
And the world crowed, cheering the success of plucky little Israel.
Truly, it did.
How times change huh?
The Arab world was pissed off, I mean, well pissed off, but what could they do? They were militarily impotent and frustrated as hell.
So they did something. Some bright spark came up with an idea of going after not Israel, but her supporters. Making life dreadful for everyone else until they started putting pressure on the hated enemy.
How? Easy, OPEC.
Now, OPEC had been founded in 1960, but no one had taken much notice until the Arab members roused it into action in 1973, after another fracas with Israel, the Yom Kippur war.
Then we noticed. Boy, did we notice, oil was cut back, prices jacked up, and we have been beholden to the oil exporters of the Arab world since.
These guys are rich, they are now very very rich. Ok, the people are not, not on a per capita GDP basis anyway, but some individuals are, and the governments have loadsa cash to play with. Cash which they don’t have to account to taxpayers for.
So, they use oil to threaten and intimidate, and cash to bribe and influence. How many universities world wide have established Islamic Studies departments with Saudi cash? Biased towards Arab viewpoints and Wahhabist ideology?
Cambridge (England) and Harvard (Mass)? Both traded their credibility for Saudi cash, and others.
Money has been spent, threats have been hinted at, friends have been made.
It all worked too, now, forty years later, who talks of plucky little Israel?
Apartheid Israel.
Racist Israel.
Warmonger Israel.
Nazi Israel.
What’s changed?
Oil, that’s what. Oh sure, part of it is the left hates success, and Israel is the lefts greatest (only?) success, but that’s bye the bye.
Oil buys influence, and Israel, free, open and democratic Israel, doesn’t have any and the thug states surrounding it do.
Ok, they don’t, but other Middle Eastern thug states do, and that’s what matters.
How much oil do these people have? How much oil is there?
Well, conventional reserves, world wide, are somewhere between 1 trillion barrels and 1.3 trillion. Of that, Saudi Arabia has 250 Billion barrels – somewhere between 20-25% of total conventional reserves (although, Saudi has been reporting those same reserve levels for years – they just don’t seem to deplete). Iraq has about 143 billion barrels, Iran has 138, and Kuwait has 104.
So, just this little group of Israel’s hatemongering and vitriolic enemies control over half the worlds confirmed conventional reserves of oil.
We have all heard the old saw about how Moses should have turned right after his stroll across the Red Sea, rather than the left turn he actually took, plonking his chums down on the one spot in the entire middle east where there is no oil.
Or did he?
Now we get to non conventional supplies of oil.
Have you heard of oil shale? Oil held not in fluid reservoirs but impregnating shale? There is a lot of this stuff, a real real lot. America for instance, has an estimated 2 trillion barrels of oil locked up in oil shale. Yep, that’s right, 2 trillion barrels. Just the US, by itself, has an amount equal to about twice the worlds proven conventional reserves.
The US doesn’t dig the stuff up mainly for regulatory reasons, it is all locked away and the clean and cost effective extraction technology is only pretty new and the disputes are being worked out. However, one country has strong reason to cut through all that guff and get the industry moving.
Venezuela has about the same as the US, but given its (roughly) 300 billion barrels of cheap conventional reserves it is in no great hurry to exploit it, and ,next, is, well, Israel, with somewhere between 250 and 500 billion barrels in the Shfela Basin, south east of Jerusalem .
Yep, when it comes to oil shale Israel has reserves at least equal to those of Saudi Arabia and maybe equal to those of Saudi, plus Iraq, plus Iran.
Game change anyone?
Now, this stuff hasn’t been exploited in the past because it was both too costly and too environmentally damaging, but that has all changed. We now know how to extract the stuff without poisoning the land, and as long as prices are over $35 per barrel it can be done at a profit too.
And Israel has real and immediate reason to take advantage of its suddenly exploitable luck. Think of the game change if Israel can shaft OPEC and engineer a glut of oil on the market. Could Iran or Saudi cope if oil suddenly halved in price? To between $60 and $70 per barrel? They’d still make oodles of cash, but they have oodles of clients too, all sucking at that oleiferous teat. Loads of friends in both the Middle East and the West would suddenly find themselves cut off and having to work for a living.
Mosques in Dearbourn and Bradford, jihadis in Beirut and London, all thrown onto their own resources.
Politicians suddenly bereft of delightful gifts and holiday hosts.
Propaganda no longer financed.
Back to an era of cheap energy for world manufacturing and transport. God! Even more reason for the red Greens to hate Israel.
As a telling side issue, you know the oil majors aren’t involved? Apparently they aren’t working with this free and open society because they don’t want to take the risk of offending Muslims and being cut off from access to the thug states. The whole effort is being driven by Zionist (that is not a pejorative term on this site) businessmen such as Lord Rothschild and Rupert Murdoch.

We need to control the spread of human rights, Supreme Court judge says

The spread of human rights across all parts of society should be controlled or it will increasingly be opposed by Government and Parliament, a senior judge has said.

Baroness Hale of Richmond also suggested that European judges may have got it wrong when they ruled that prisoners should have the right to vote.

The news could embolden David Cameron, the Prime Minister, to defy the European Court of Human Rights and refuse to give prisoners the vote.

In a speech, Lady Hale, a Justice of the Supreme Court, said there were “natural limits” against the application of the European Convention on Human Rights.

She described the Convention, which was introduced in the UK as the Human Rights Act in 2000, as a “living tree” whose growth had to be controlled.

She told an audience at Gresham College in London, she said: “As a supporter of the Convention and the work of the Supreme Court, my plea to them is to accept there are some natural limits to the growth and development of the living tree.

“Otherwise, I have a fear that their judgements and those of the national courts which follow them, will increasingly be defied by our governments and Parliaments. This is a very rare phenomenon at present and long may it remain so.”

Lady Hale touched on the ongoing row about the rights of prisoners to vote, suggesting that this was an example of judges going too far.

National courts had to try “loyally to keep pace with the evolution and on occasions to make a reasonable prediction of where Strasbourg will go next.

“In the end, the standard most often appealed to in the court’s jurisprudence is the common European understanding.”

Sometimes judges relied on domestic legislation, or other times by “evolving European attitudes and beliefs”.

She added: “Sometimes, as in Hirst v United Kingdom [which said that a blanket ban on giving prisoners the vote was against the Convention] it seems to get some way ahead of both, because bans on prisoners’ voting are common throughout Europe.”

Human rights rulings, she said, had to take into account the views of the individual parliaments as well.

They “should seek to strike a fair balance, between the universal values of freedom and equality embodied in the Convention, and the particular choices made by the democratically-elected Parliaments of the member states”, she said.

Lady Hale added: “Some values, such as the right to life and freedom from torture, are non-negotiable but others are more delicately nuanced.”

The speech could embolden Mr Cameron, who is against giving prisoners the right to vote, to face down the European Court and refuse to agree to the measure. MPs voted overwhelmingly in February not to give prisoners the vote.

In April a leaked Government document said the European court had no legal powers to force officials to pay compensation for denying prisoners their human rights.

The "Growing Tree" which she describes can be pruned and can be cut down completely if necessary. I think it's NECESSARY to cut that tree down now.

Britain can do 'nothing' to prevent Argentina retaking Falkland Islands

Admiral Sir John "Sandy" Woodward also said that America now had little interest in supporting Britain in any conflict as a stable Argentina was more important to the State Department.

In a letter to The Daily Telegraph, Adml Woodward said Washington was pushing for negotiations over sovereignty and "significantly the islands are already being called the Malvinas by the US".

With the end of the Cold War and emergence of Asian powers Nato and Britain were not as important to Washington which in 1982 played a significant part in providing satellite intelligence and missiles to British forces.

"We can no longer rely on the Pentagon to support us in helping the islanders in their wish to remain essentially British sovereign territory," he wrote.

If as is likely significant oil reserves are found around the islands then pressure from Argentina will be immense to share in the riches.

The US would support an Argentine "accommodation" as its national interest supports stability in the area. "This tells us all too clearly which way the wind is blowing." The Organization of American States, a talking shop for north and south American countries, last week adopted a declaration calling for negotiations between Britain and Argentina over the "sovereignty" of the Falkland Islands.

President Barack Obama's administration also made clear in early 2010 that it would endorse calls for talks over the islands when it adopted the Organisation of American States useage of Malvinas instead of Falklands.

Adml Woodward said with the Armed Forces already "over-committed" in Afghanistan and Libya and the Navy drastically weakened following last year's defence review "the answer appears to be that we can do precisely nothing other than accede to US pressure".

The 79-year-old admiral led a substantial task force of two aircraft carriers, a dozen frigates and destroyers, four submarines and a total of 100 surface ships along with 25,000 servicemen were to retake the Falklands in 1982.

But the Royal Navy no longer has aircraft carriers, has lost its force of Harrier jump jets and seen its warship fleet cut in half over the last decade.

The islands are currently protected by a force of more than 1,000 troops with a reinforced company of infantry and four Typhoon fighters and a single frigate. However the Typhoons have no anti-ship or anti-submarine capability.

In a letter obtained by The Daily Telegraph last year Liam Fox, the Defence Secretary, warned the Prime Minister that the island's defences would become fragile in light of the looming cuts in the Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR).

He said axing the Nimrod MRA4 maritime reconnaissance aircraft would "limit our ability to deploy maritime forces rapidly into high-threat areas, and delete one element of our Falklands reinforcement plan".

The last of the £3.6 billion Nimrods was destroyed in March following the defence review.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman said: "Claims that the Falkland Islands could be taken without a fight are completely without substance. The current garrison in the Falkland Islands is much larger in scale and has a greater capability than in 1982 and this together with our ability to reinforce rapidly by air has been maintained. "
