Food is the most crucial requirement for human beings, and yet, as a new government report reveals, this country's food policy is in something of a mess. Labour has spent more than a decade undermining farming, creating a culture that seemed to regard farmers as intruders in a landscape that should be reserved for birds and tubercular badgers. Now, though, Hilary Benn and his Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) are suddenly warning of the dangers to food security from natural disasters, disruption to fuel supplies and transport networks, and commodity price spikes.

Hundreds arrested in French violence
HAPPY NEW YEAR 2010.
New Year's Eve celebrations turned violent in regions across France as youths burned more than 1,000 cars overnight and police arrested nearly 400 people.
Car burnings have become a regular occurrence in the poor, immigrant-heavy suburbs that ring France's biggest cities, but the incidents of arson are especially prevalent on New Year's Eve.
