Yesterday's by-election in Wigan West produced the following results:
Labour 817 (38.3%)
Conservative 528 (24.8%)
Liberal Democrat 344 (16.1%)
BNP 200 (9.4%)
UKIP 124 (5.8%)
CAP 118 (5.5%)
Overall turnout 21.5%
That last number - 21.5% - is the most important information there, and I will return to it.
Our percentage of the vote dropped by almost the same as the UKIP vote. Ukip have never opposed us before in this ward, so it seems reasonable to conclude that UKIP is taking votes away from us here.
The Labour vote was down, and this is despite having some serious local power out doorknocking: Neil Turner MP and at least four councillors were seen on the streets getting out their vote.
The Conservative vote is up.
As a group, we are going to have to dicuss this. After the count I talked with representatives of the Cap, UKIP, and Lib/Dem parties. We reached a tentative conclusion about the next step we must take, but this public place is not where we should talk about that. We are all agreed - and that includes the Conservatives - that the key task is to break the stranglehold that the Labour party seems to have on the minds of the people of Wigan.
Turnout: this is crucial. Four out of every five potential voters in this ward didn't bother voting. I suspect it wouldn't have been much different in any other ward. I believe this low turnout is a part of that Labour stranglehold on the minds of the people of Wigan that I mentioned earlier.
As a party (just like all the other non-Labour parties if the talk last night was anything to go by) we believe that if you stuck a red rosette on a monkey and held it up on a stick, then the people of Wigan would elect it. Maybe that four out of five who didn't/don't vote believe the same thing ... so don't bother going out to the polling station. Well, all I can say about that is "self-fulfilling prophecy". Would it be more accurate to say that if we stuck a red rosette on a monkey and held it up on a stick that one fifth of the people of Wigan would elect it.
Let's take a look at the 2004 General election. Neil Turner won for Labour with 55% of the vote. However, only 53% of the voters bothered turning out. If you work through the numbers on that, it turns out that the Labour party had the positive endorsement of no more than 29% of the people of Wigan. So Labour is not invulnerable here. And as I said earlier, the most important issue is turnout. I believe that if we - all non-Labour parties together - could persuade the non-voters to turn out then we could finish Labour in this town.
So - how do we increase turnout? We are going to have to discuss this. And that means that whether we like it or not all the non-Labour parties are going to have to discuss this together. In public is not the place to do this - no point tipping our hand to Labour, is there.
I did notice at the count - and I've noticed it at other counts too - all we non-Labour party people get on well with each other, but mostly, the Labour people seem hostile to everyone else - almost as if they see themselves as being at war against the British. But I must give some credit to one Labour councillor: Phyll Cullen made a point of speaking to me. She asked about why Susan wasn't standing, and did seem genuinely concerned to hear about Susan's recent medical difficulties, and wishes all the best to her. Thank you Phyll. We'll remember that.
As for the rest of us - we've got two years to find a way to get the turnout up. I'm personally convinced that the only way to bring Labour to heel is to get turnout up. Ideas folks, ideas. Think. And other parties that read this site - you do the same. Ideas. Mustn't depend on just a couple of people in each party to come up with the ideas. The cleverest thing in the world isn't one or two people - the cleverest thing in the world is large group of people.

HOW TO SAVE OUR POST OFFICES.
Congratulations to Oldham Council for helping to keep open five post offices in the town. Post offices are an integral part of village life and a vital service for those unable to travel to town. The government sheds crocodile tears and talks weasel words about efficiency while creating the conditions where smaller post offices can not compete.
Postage stamps can be bought by the public cheaper at stores such as COSTCO than the owners of post offices can buy them from the Royal Mail. The post office shop owners are debarred from buying stamps at these cheap prices. How then can they compete when they must pay more for stamps than their customers.
Road tax has been removed from many as have payment of water rates, television licences etc.
There seems to be a deliberate policy of destruction of this service.
The Oldham way of saving this service is not however necessary and is a costly way of doing it.
I believe post offices should have the monopoly of selling stamps and other postal services, and post offices in supermarkets and large town centre shops closed. This would at a stroke give back trade to the smaller shops at no cost and ensure their survival.
Of course the Labour Party and possibly the Tories are subsidized by big business, ie the supermarkets so they will be against this and cite EU regulations on competition.
This is another reason to be against the EU. Protecting a valued institution and the associated benefits to local life should not be sacrificed on the altar of greed, especially when the measures I propose would cost nothing.
Making people travel miles to a post office in a supermarket seems illogical when the government is supposedly trying to cut traffic congestion.

REMEMBER TO VOTE IN WIGAN WEST TOMORROW!
Apologies for my absence from this blog for the past 3 weeks.Just back from a holiday taken to help my wife convalesce from her illness. This is the reason she is not standing in Wigan West this time. Fortunately Chris Hilton has stepped into the breach and is our BNP candidate.
Chris is a hard working committed Christian, who has a long experience of local political activism, although in his immature youth he was a Liberal supporter.
Labour has betrayed its core supporters both locally and nationally and nowadays puts the interests of its often foreign, rich donors and the increasing numbers of immigrants before those of the British people. At the same time it has allowed our manufacturing industry to be decimated while wasting our taxes on politically correct non jobs such as that of Elliot Brown our "hate crime coordinator".
The Tories are no better and indeed have compared themselves to New Labour. The Lib Dems do not seem to have any policies to set them apart from the others while UKIP is a one card trick.
The results of the policies of past Labour and Tory administrations are becoming evident as Nick Griffin forecast 3 years ago and things will get much worse in coming months.
That this recession would come was obvious when our industries have been sold abroad and a massive debt has been allowed to accrue. Now the government has no room for manoevre.
The only hope for our country and town is a move to the BNP as only they will ALWAYS put the interests of local people first and support British industries and jobs.

THE EXPERIENCE THAT BLINDS
This article was written in America, and is talking specifically about America. However, it generalises right across the world (the reference in it to "The Dead Isle" is a reference to Britain. Then, bearing that argument in mind, consider the lives and lifestyles of our elite groups: our politicians, our media people, our academics our business leaders ... and wonder no more about where these suicidal notions of multiculturalism and political correctness come from, and why those notions are so vehemently defended to the point of creating oppressive laws to defend them - and hiring oppressive people to enforce those laws (you there Elliot?). Wonder no more why they support mass immigration from all over the world - they all live at the clean end of the stick. The only way they will change their minds is if they have to live at the dirty end of the stick like the rest of us - and dirty in the way it is now, not the way it was thirty years ago when they did live at what was then the dirty end of the stick ... but it was a cleaner dirty.
Wonder no more why our way of life and our children's future are being flushed away.

DON'T YOU WISH YOU HAD WRITTEN THIS?
Subject: Passport Application
Dear Minister,
I'm in the process of renewing my passport but I am a total loss to understand or believe the hoops I am being asked to jump through.
How is it that Bert Smith of T.V. Rentals Basingstoke has my address and telephone number and knows that I bought a satellite dish from them back in 1994, and yet, the Government is still asking me where I was born and on what date?
How come that nice West African immigrant chappy who comes round every Thursday night with his DVD rentals van can tell me every film or video I have had out since he started his business up eleven years ago, yet you still want me to remind you of my last three jobs, two of which were with contractors working for the government?
How come the T.V. detector van can tell if my T.V. is on, what channel I am watching and whether I have paid my licence or not, and yet if I win the government run lottery they have no idea I have won or where I am and will keep the bloody money to themselves if I fail to claim in good time.
Do you people do this by hand?
You have my birth date on numerous files you hold on me, including the one with all the income tax forms I've filed for the past 30-odd years. It's on my health insurance card, my driver's licence, on the last four passports I've had, on all those stupid customs declaration forms I've had to fill out before being allowed off the planes and boats over the last 30 years, and all those insufferable census forms that are done every ten years and the electoral registration forms I have to complete, by law, every time our lords and masters are up for re-election.
Would somebody please take note, once and for all, I was born in Maidenhead on the 4th of March 1957, my mother's name is Mary, her maiden name was Reynolds, my father's name is Robert, and I'd be absolutely astounded if that ever changed between now and the day I die!
I apologise Minister. I'm obviously not myself this morning. But between you and me, I have simply had enough! You mail the application to my house, then you ask me for my address. What is going on? Do you have a gang of Neanderthals working there? Look at my damn picture. Do I look like Bin Laden? I don't want to activate the Fifth Reich for God's sake! I just want to go and park my weary backside on a sunny, sandy beach for a couple of week's well-earned rest away from all this crap.
Well, I have to go now, because I have to go to back to Salisbury and get another copy of my birth certificate because you lost the last one. AND to the tune of 60 quid! What a racket THAT is!! Would it be so complicated to have all the services in the same spot to assist in the issuance of a new passport the same day? But nooooo, that'd be too damn easy and maybe make sense. You'd rather have us running all over the place like chickens with our heads cut off, then find some tosser to confirm that it's really me on the goddamn picture - you know... the one where we're not allowed to smile in in case we look as if we are enjoying the process!
Hey, you know why we can't smile? 'Cause we're totally jacked off!
I served in the armed forces for more than 25 years including over ten years at the Ministry of Defence in London. I have had security clearances which allowed me to sit in the Cabinet Office, five seats away from the Prime Minister while he was being briefed on the first Gulf War and I have been doing volunteer work for the British Red Cross ever since I left the Services. However, I have to get someone "important" to verify who I am -- you know, someone like my doctor...
who, before he got his medical degree 6 months ago WAS LIVING IN PAKISTAN...
