FOR SALE - CONSERVATIVE MINISTERS £1000 A TIME

The Conservatives have been accused of offering businessmen access to ministers in return for cash.

Wealthy supporters have been invited to enjoy "fine wines and superb food" with senior figures during the party's conference in Birmingham in September.

Tickets are on sale at £500 and each table will include a "prominent Conservative MP".

But those prepared to double it to £1,000 will sit alongside at least one serving minister.

Chancellor George Osborne is set to be the guest of honour at the first Conservative Party Business Dinner.

The Tories have defended the event and said both Labour and the Liberal Democrats hold similar fundraisers.

"Under the current system, events to raise money are vital to pay for the running of the party, as they always have been for all political parties," a party spokesman said.

But Sir Alistair Graham, a former chairman of the committee on standards in public life, told the Daily Telegraph: "If you're trying to set a high moral tone, this sort of thing is unwise.

"Governing parties need to be very careful about their fund-raising.

"The public reacts very strongly to the idea that you can buy influence with government."

Telegraph reporter James Kirkup, who broke the story, told Sky News the Tories were in danger of not living up to their promise to introduce a "new politics".
